Kick-off June 2024 by celebrating the rebellious spirit of #NationalMoonshineDay! Once an illicit backwoods brew, moonshine has transformed into a celebrated craft spirit. This day provides a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating story of moonshine, explore delicious recipes, and understand its significance in American culture.

The History of Moonshine--

Moonshine, a.k.a., white lightning, Mountain Dew, or Hooch, is a VERY high-proof distilled spirit traditionally made from corn mash. Its name originates from the covert (or "moonlit") operations used to produce and distribute it illegally, particularly during the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933).

During Prohibition, the production, sale, and transport of alcoholic beverages were outlawed, leading many to resort to illegal distilling. Moonshiners often operated in remote areas to evade law enforcement, and the resulting product was sometimes of questionable quality, often referred to as "rotgut."

Despite the risks, moonshine became an integral part of North American folklore and rural life, symbolizing defiance against government regulation and a means of economic survival for many families.

After Prohibition ended, the demand for illegal moonshine decreased, but the spirit's legacy continued. Modern moonshine, now legally produced, retains its rebellious charm while offering improved safety and quality.

Artistic Significance

Moonshine holds a special place in North American culture, symbolizing a spirit of independence and inventiveness. It represents the struggle of small-time distillers who defied laws to provide for their families and communities. The tales of moonshiners, their undercover operations, and their daring escapades have become part of American folklore, celebrated in songs, movies, and television shows.

In contemporary times, the revival of legal moonshine production has brought this storied spirit into the spotlight, allowing new generations to appreciate its unique qualities. Craft distilleries across the country are now producing high-quality moonshine, often incorporating local ingredients and innovative flavors.
